Let's bring blood donation back to Northern BC.
While we disagree with Canadian Blood Services' current position that a Northern BC blood donor centre is not feasible, we are committed to their work to save Canadian lives with through a strong national blood supply.
Advancing our case for blood donation in the North means we as Northern British Columbians have to do everything we can now to show we're making the effort to engage in Canada's blood supply... even if it means we have to do so at considerable travel time and expense.
We encourage all Northern British Columbians to do the following:
Donate blood, plasma, or platelets when you travel
When you do, please be sure to tell the donor centre staff where you're from. When you're booking an appointment, please tell the call centre staff that you're donating, and how you'd donate more often when blood donation returns to Northern BC.
The closest permanent donor sites to Northern BC are in Kelowna, Metro Vancouver, Edmonton, and Calgary.
You can reach Canadian Blood Services at 1-888-2-DONATE (1-888-236-6283) or visit http://blood.ca
Register for organ donation with BC Transplant
BC Transplant is the official registry for British Columbians to show their consent for organ donation. It's no longer tied to your driver's license.
We believe any donation of blood, organs, and tissues is a good donation. We encourage you to register at register.transplant.bc.
Register for stem cell donation with Canadian Blood Services
We support Canadian Blood Services goal of increasing the number of stem cell donors. There is an active UNBC stem cell group (visit their Facebook page) that does swabbing events to help people register as potential donors.
You can find out more on Canadian Blood Services' stem cell registry page.
